Situated east of Memphis, Cordova Tennessee is a nice community that is at an elevation of 361 feet above sea level. The majority of the area is annexed by the City of Memphis.
The rest of the area is in an unincorporated area of Shelby County, Memphis. Boundaries aren’t exact are very open to interpretation.
Typically, the Wolf River on the south of the area and Whitten Road on the west. I40 to the North and Pisgah Road to the east of the city.
A quaint farming village lying just east of Memphis has less than a dozen farms today than when it was first founded in the year 1835.
Over the course of many years, Cordova’s name has changed multiple times. From Allentown to Marysville to Dexter, it has undergone many names until in the year 1900 it was finally left as Cordova.
Likely, it was changed to avoid confusion with another Dexter located near the railway that ran through both towns.
In 1889, the train station was a common stop along the town of Cordova. Today, that train station still stands at the corner of none other than Macon Road and B street in downtown Cordova.
It was sold recently to a person who has chosen to renovate it to use it for a retail business. An ammunition plant was situated near the railway during World War II for easy access.
A seven-year battle challenged the area for the right of Memphis to annex parts of the town of Cordova. They wanted subdivisions and land developments. Memphis finally completed the annexation of the Cordova area on U.S. 64 to Fayette County.
Cordova has continued to preserve the past with a historic downtown area that celebrates with annual celebrations of craft fairs and a special parade on the Fourth of July.
Some of the areas are portioned off and zoned to Germantown Middle School as well as Germantown High School. These won’t be a part of the municipal school system in Germantown.
Cordova is also home to Mid-American Baptist theological Seminary or MABTS and is part of the Accredited Commission of Colleges for the Southern Association of Colleges.
In 2010, the census showed that there were 78,138 persons residing in the Cordova area and 31,403 households. The average household income is $67,437 and a median income of about $82,319 for families. Only about 6 to 7 percent of households were below the poverty line.
